Year 6’s Budding JK Rowling’s

Year 6 have been planning and writing Fantasy Quest stories where a main character has a problem or dilemma to solve. The stories have been planned on a story mountain planner and written up using these plans. The children have been using a whole range of writing skills to develop their description of characters and setting. The stories are being written in the 1st person so that we can imagine ourselves in the position of our hero character. Here is Rebecca’s beginning which uses a great simile;

“Oh great one! You’ve kicked it in the bush!!”I shouted.

This always happened when we played football. I crept carefully in to the spiky, green bush. Stinging nettles were pricking my arms like a hundred needles.

Matthew was clearly inspired by the BBC TV series Merlin with this excellent description of his hero’s main weapon;

The Golden Sword was gleaming in the bright yellow sun, it was buried inside a dark, black stone that lay in a clearing in the woods.

Cariad has clearly been watching some scary films recently judging by the description of her evil character Dr V’illan;

He had green, rough skin tightly stretched around his square face, and his hair was darker than the dead of night. He wore dagger like boots wearing a thick coat of blood. His nails were long and razor sharp, he could easily pierce the skin of a Rhinoceros. I knew, for obvious reasons, they were his main weapon!

This is all pretty scary stuff but our Year 6’s are quite normal really!
