Year 5 Star dome

Thursday 25th April saw the Year 5 ‘Space’ topic launch. Year 5 were invited to clamber inside their very own star dome for a whistle -stop tour of the cosmos! Guided by Russell and Kaz -our two very knowledgeable and engaging experts- the children learned not only of the scientific secrets of our galaxy, but of the terrific tales told by the ancient Greeks about dashing Perseus, beautiful Andromeda and Leo the fearsome lion!
Overhead the whirling galaxy was illuminated and we visited the constellations, even learning to navigate true North by using the Plough ( or Frying Pan if you are Welsh) to find Polaris -the North Star, which never moves. Afterwards the children all agreed that visiting the star dome had been an exhilarating experience and they had gained some fantastic facts to take back to class and use in their topic work. Fired up with enthusiasm we returned to class to begin work on our D.T project, planning and producing some excellent fully operational orreries.
